Town Hall Meeting Reflection
The town hall meeting was really damn fun. Debates are really fun, but historical debates are even more fun. You get to take the place of someone you might not share beliefs with, and that makes everything more interesting. I had to place myself into a prideful, arrogant, loyalist, when that is entirely contrary to my beliefs.
I felt a warm inside during the debate because I was having a genuinely fun time. I felt prideful towards England somehow, but that’s only because of my character.
The loyalists major point was that they held power and power means everything. THe patriots promised lower taxes. I felt as if the loyalists had more backbone to their arguments and actually gave good points.
I found the loyalist arguments more convincing. The patriots didn’t have much to back themselves up, but the loyalists did.
I think so many colonists were neutral because the colonies were functioning with England as the governmental power. Some colonists probably thought an uprising wasn’t worth it. This relates to Scotland and its people wanting independence. Scotland is still part of the UK because it is functioning fine. Taxes might have gone up in the colonies, but they wouldn’t have stayed that way.
The most important thing I learned is how loud we can all be. In the past my peers complained about debates, now they seem to enjoy it.
