Look @ Me Now
Tait Carrillo
Theme:
Growth. Every person’s life revolves around trial and error. Trial and error promotes growth and revision, two very important aspects of growing up. People grow into and out of things constantly. Personally I have grown into and out of many many things despite my young age. I had experienced heavy conflict and obstacles that has began to form me into a mature adult. Going through conflict, going through pain, is something that I have overcome. Coming out of conflict makes you stronger. My goal is to grow mentally and spiritually stronger. A strong character is one of the best things a person can have.
Setting:
My favorite place to be is also the place I am most, outside. I bike in the canyon, I practice Tai Chi in the canyon, and I condition my body in the canyon. The canyon is tranquil, peaceful. I feel so peaceful when I’m there, no matter what I’m doing. It’s a place where I feel free to do whatever I feel like. Everything is calm, I’m calm. No one else is around and all I can feel is the breeze. The crisp air surrounds me. When I feel the cool against my skin, I feel serene. It’s not just any canyon, it’s my canyon.
Conflict:
One of the most challenging things in my life right now is adjusting socially. I always feel out of place. I enjoy solidarity and alone time. Solidarity allows for processed thought, analysis of the area around, and overall peace. I do like being social but don’t share common interests with many people. I feel a wall between myself and others because of the one way interests. Most of this conflict is probably just in my head, but it still affects me. I really do enjoy solidarity but I hope to learn to enjoy social life at school.
Characterization:
There are many driving forces in my life, entities who push me to do tasks that are difficult. The first being the Christian God. Christianity helps me to be the best person I possibly can be. The Christian God shows me love and respect even when I make mistakes, the only thing my God wants in return is for me to follow his word and his guidance. The next being my Kung Fu instructor, My Sifu, and Tai SiGung. The reason I grouped them together is because they all drive me to be the best martial artist possible. They push me to complete tasks that are far beyond my experience and skill level. The last being my parents. They push me to be the best person I possibly can be and teach me everyday. The common link between all driving forces is that they all inspire me to do good things and better myself whether spiritually, physically, or emotionally.
Protagonist:
One person in my life that I really look up to and someone who drives me forward is my Grandmother. She supports all of my endeavors and is my best friend. She is there for me no matter what and is always a happy soul. She’s a very positive influence and makes me want to do good in this world. I have enjoyed my grandmothers present for as long as I can remember. I have always been close to her and have always adored her. Shes the one person I will never forget. She loves me unconditionally and I love her the same way. Her happy essence fills my heart with an idealogy of success. All I want is to make her proud.
Antagonist:
My greatest antagonist is myself. I think of myself as a very intellectually curious person who wants to know every piece of information. My mind creates puzzles that must be put together. I analyze almost every situation to try to rational every piece of information. Over observation and analyzation can sometimes lead to over thinking. This isn’t really a negative, it’s actually overall positive. The only negative thing that comes from it is being distracted by certain events. For example I have a big Kung Fu presentation coming up and it’s the only thing on my mind.
Flashback:
Many negative and positive things have happened in my life to shape me into who I am. The most positive of situations is just growing up with my brother in general. I have so many great memories with him and he's one of my favorite people. We have done so many great things together. Just recently we spent a great vacation in Colorado. One distinct memory I have of my brother and I was a trip we took when we were very young. Whenever I look at the portrait atop the couch, the beautiful scenery of June Lake scatters my concious. I remember the beautiful horizon that sat along the frozen lake.
Irony:
There isn’t much irony in my life but the first thing that comes to mind is that I mountain bike but have really good balance. With something like biking you would assume my balance is good, but its really not. It’s also ironic because of Martial Arts. Martial Arts typically create good strong balance, yes my balance is getting better because of it, but not by much. It’s definitely challenging having unstable balance. It’s slightly hindering in areas such as what I enjoy.
Symbolism:
Trees are one of the most symbolic things in my life. Theyre so versatile and I use them for many things. I use trees to strengthen my bones for Kung Fu, to spot trails for mountain biking, and just climb them for fun. To me they symbolize size, strength, and overall natural beauty. Trees have a lot of meaning in many different idealogies and cultures, but what's important to me is the peace they bring.
Foreshadow:
My current Kung Fu sash level foreshadows where I want to go into the future. I want to continue growing as a martial artist and better myself in that field. I am being pushed to do things beyond my level in Kung Fu and it really inspires me to go very far and dedicate a lot of energy into it. I am practicing sword training, a very high skill level technique, at a very low experience level.

Reflection:
The "Look @ Me Now," project was a chance to express my memories and feel comfortable describing my life to the class. I feel as if art and literature is one of the best ways to express yourself. It's easier to use literary devices to describe hardships as opposed to just openly writing.
